Left behind to cherish his memory are: his wife of 55 years, Betsy Murray Cross; daughter, Christi Cross; grandson, William Cross; sister, Brenda King (Don); brothers-in-law, Ronnie Murray (Rhonda); James “Dowdy” Murray (Carolyn); best friend, Stewart McNeill (Linda), several cousins, nieces, nephews and a favorite cousin, Eugenia “Genie” Cross.
Richard was born January 7, 1949 in Siler City, NC at Chatham Hospital to Carl Lee and Lessie Mae Davis Cross. He was raised in Ramseur, NC. His favorite pastime as a child was squirrel hunting with his grandpa, Old Man Charlie Cross. He also rode his bicycle all over Ramseur and swam in the Deep River. He picked blackberries and delivered newspapers to make enough money to go to the movies. As a teenager, he went to work at Randolph Mills in Franklinville. He enlisted in the Navy in 1967 and was sent to Vietnam. He actively served there for 2 years. After returning home he met and fell in love with Betsy. They were married in 1970 and made their home in Asheboro. Christi was born in 1973 and completed their family.
Richard and Betsy built their home in 1980 and they moved their family for the final time. They started Village Plumbing Supply in 1989 in Asheboro. They ran this business for more than 21 years, when they retired.
Richard was a husband, father, PawPaw, hunter, fisherman and a friend to many. Above all else though, he was a cowboy. He had horses from an early age but really became an avid horseman later in life. He won numerous buckles in team penning, sorting and cowboy mounted shooting. He truly loved being on the back of a horse. Richard was gifted a grandson in 2006 and he got a fishing and hunting buddy. Will was the apple of both his PawPaw’s eyes. They were big buddies. He loved taking his family on trips to Gatlinburg, the beach, Tweetsie and anywhere else they wanted to go. He was a family man through and through and will be missed beyond measure.
