Robert Elton Ward, Sr., of Liberty, died August 22, 2015 at Coventry House of Siler City. Robert, the son of the late Dennis and Nannie Frazier Ward, was born December 24, 1925. He was the youngest of eleven children.
Robert “Mutt” resided with his wife, Sallie Pendergrass Ward, for 65 years in Liberty, and their last five years together at Coventry House of Siler City. He was a caring father who was always there for Robert Elton Ward, Jr., and his wife Carolyn, Kenneth Alfred Ward and his wife Shug, and Sallie Ann Ward VanLear, and her husband Charles Albert VanLear, III. He enjoyed spending time with his four granddaughters, Thea Ward Robichaux, Jennifer Ward James, Taeh Allison Ward, and Sarah Ward Sherman. Due to his long life, he was blessed to be a part of the lives of three great grandchildren, Zyler Ward Robichaux, Ivy Charles Robichaux, IV, Elodie Blythe Booher Sherman. He unfortunately never met his latest grandson, Hayden Kenneth James and will miss the joy of knowing another great grandchild which is due in September. He loved his family.
In addition to his immediate family, left to cherish his memory is one sister, Mary Ward McAtee of Newbury Park, California, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Robert was a devoted husband who worked hard to provide for his family. While working and raising his young family, Robert attended Guilford College and became an accountant. In addition to working at Liberty Chair Company, he and Sallie had a bookkeeping service in their home. They both enjoyed visiting with the clients each tax season and keeping up with their families. Lasting friendships developed from this bookkeeping service, from their travels, and from his hobbies of fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was never too busy to help others and the door to their home was always open for visitors. Robert was a member of First Baptist Church, Liberty, the Lions Club and later the Rotary Club. He served as a Boy Scout Leader and a little league baseball coach. Robert served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.
