He was born in Brooklyn, New York to Grace Leonard and the late John Thomas Leonard.
He was raised in Long Island New York and attended Newfield High School.
At the age of 17, he followed his father's footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Sergeant.
He served four years and fought in the Vietnam war.
Upon his honorable discharge, he pursued his lifetime goal and joined the Suffolk County Police Department where he quickly climbed the ranks to Homicide Detective.
During his tenure as a homicide detective, he solved many cases and was most proud of a 26-year-old "cold case" in which a man savagely murdered a woman. His department's motto was "Our day begins when your day ends."
After 21 years of dedicating his life to protecting society, he retired and relocated to Lighthouse Point Florida, where he has resided with his wife Zena.
During his retirement, Gary loved the beach, "happy hour" vacationing and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He just loved retirement.
Gary was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (pop pop). He is survived by his wife, Zena (honey bee), his daughter Jill, and her two children, Jordan and Brooke, his son Kevin and his wife Jill, and their three children, Morgan, Austin and Shawn.
Gary's oldest son Gary Jr. also known as "Bo" passed away in 2016. He is survived by his son Cole.
Gary is also survived by his mother, Grace (who named him the King), his sisters, Maureen and her husband John, Patty, and Jackie, and his brother John and his wife Sue.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He is loved and going to be truly missed by his "Honey Bee".
