Hubert Juergen Klaus Ganter was born in Lima, Peru on July 29th, 1941 to the name of his father Hans Gerson Ganter and his mother Germaine “Muti” Marguarite Hindemith and his beautiful sister, Karin Elke Ganter.
Hugh and Karin were born into worldly riches and quickly lost everything. After their father saved many officers from a German battle ship, Gerson was exciled from Peru forcing the Ganters’ back to their homeland, Germany in 1943. Shortly after, Garson was shipped to Siberia which split up the Ganter Family.
Muti, Hugh and Karin lived on a farm in Germany and met, Rols Bluecher, in 1948 who raised Hugh and Karin.
They lived through poverty and depression, living in an outhouse with no electric, no running water and bunkers in their backyard, all about 8 kilometers from a large natzi camp. In 1952 they moved to Canada to make a better life.
In 1959, Hugh, with his ambitious dreams moved to America to go to college and was drafted and honored to serve for the US Army. He served in the 2nd armored cavalry as a tank commander. After serving his new country for 3 years and day, he finished college at Buffalo state, and did graduate work at Auburn and Siena, Italy.
In the 1960’s, Hugh moved to Freeport, Bahamas to reunite with his sister, karin, and live the life of a very successful beach bum. In 1973, Hugh raised the independence flag, worked for Basra and ran the beach concession at the Lucaya beach resort and met the love of his life, Joy Josephine Ganter.
Joy and Hugh ended up chaperoning a date night amongst Hugh’s friend and Joy’s baby sister Pamela Cutugno, and Joy swore she would have nothing to do with this beach bum.
Joy was escaping a bad marriage and failed to tell papa she had a newborn baby. Something must have sparked, because 6 months later Joy showed back up in Freeport with her baby boy, Christopher O’Berg. Hugh feel in love immediately and walked in to their local watering hole, the Victorian Inn, and it was at this moment that everyone in the bar shouted out, look Hughie is Papa and from that day on he was known as Papa Hughie.
Having spent many years in the Bahamas, Joy, Mama Joy, and Hugh “Papa Hughie” Ganter moved to Lighthouse Point, Florida and had their second son, Troy Hugh Ganter and had a clear vision of the their family business; a hole in the wall fish market and seafood shack at the south end of the Main Street shopping plaza on federal highway. Their goal was to combine the freshest seafood with delicious, mouth-watering, island inspired recipes and serve in a casual, friendly atmosphere. The mission was to only buy, sell, cater, and serve the freshest, highest quality products. We source whole fresh fish, which is filleted in our market and served fresh from our boats to your table.
In the spring of 2014 The Ganter’s son Troy Ganter and his beautiful wife Cassie opened Papa’s Raw Bar next door to Seafood World and are now celebrating their 50th year doing business in Lighthouse Point, FL.
Papa— the heart, soul, and patriarch of our restaurant family. He built something extraordinary from the ground up, guided by hard work, faith, and love.
Through his vision and determination, he created more than a business — he built a home where people came together, shared meals, and became family. His legacy lives on not only in the success of the restaurant but in the kindness, warmth, and values he instilled in everyone around him.
