James David Hall, age 73 passed on May 11, 2026. After emergency back surgery that left him a quadriplegic he fought through sheer strength and determination and shocked us all with his astonishing progress. Jim was standing and preparing to take his first step. His unwavering will to keep fighting gave him two more precious years to share with his family and friends. As he would say: I gave it a gallant effort.
Jim was The Hunny Bunny of his loving wife Janice Lockwood; brother to Debbie Hall and the late Richard and Michael Hall; proud Father of Kerri (Jason) Shellard, Kristi (Brian) Terpstra, and Jamie (Doug) Strock; Papa to Jesse Zarate, Johnny Shellard, Silver Shellard, Audrina Terpstra, Aria Terpstra, Alexa Terpstra, Jaxon Strock and Liam Strock; dear relative and friend of many.
Jim was proud to serve two tours in beautiful southeast Asia as a chopper pilot in Vietnam.
Jim was a proud member of his union; International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, where he started out as a mechanic, working his way through every type of crane until retiring as a respected tower crane operator in downtown Chicago. He worked hard and made lifelong friendships throughout his career. A true friend and mentor to his 150 brothers and apprentices. Jim enjoyed his membership in the Local 150 Emerald Club, as well, where they worked to raise money to support local charities and downed brothers in the Chicago Land area.
After enjoying a wonderful retirement in Chicago, it took just one visit to South Florida for Jim and Janice to make the move to a warmer climate beginning a new chapter. He was right at home at the local watering holes, outside along the beach, where his outgoing and friendly personality attracted some really great people who became good friends, some like family. He was known for his big heart and sarcastic wit that made everyone smile. A real Badass with a heart of gold.
