Susan Yeong Joo Kang Vance passed away on August 15, 2025 following a multi-year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Kevin Vance, their children Ellen (age 17) and Lucas (age 14); brother David (Mia) Kang of Scarsdale, New York; sister Mary (Bill) Sway of Sugar Hill, Georgia; nieces Kari Sway and Maddie Kang, and nephews Zach Sway and Benjamin Kang. Susan’s parents, Eog Man and Jeong Ja Kang, predeceased her.
Susan was born in Seoul, South Korea on June 27, 1971. Her family moved to Newport News, Virginia in 1975. She graduated from Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News in 1989, and Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City in 1993. After living in Manhattan and working on Wall Street for several years after college, Susan went to law school at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, where her sister was then living with her family. Susan graduated from Capital Law in 2003.
Susan and Kevin met in 2001 in Columbus and quickly became a couple. They became engaged to be married in 2002, and moved to South Florida in 2003. Susan had always wanted to live “where people go on vacation,” and she and Kevin never regretted the move. They were married in July 2004 in Fort Lauderdale.
Susan and Kevin moved to Lighthouse Point shortly after their wedding, and they fell in love with the community. They decided to raise their family there, and Susan worked as a real estate lawyer, first in several law firms and then in her own practice.
Susan was selfless—she was quick to ask about others before talking about herself. She pushed Kevin to think bigger about his career and her kids to do the best, always. To say that Susan was a devoted wife and mother is an understatement. As the end drew near, she used all the strength she had to continue to dote on her children and husband, caring for them often before herself. The force of her love for her family will endure.
Susan was courageous in her lengthy battle with cancer, even when the news she received was dispiriting. She grew to appreciate that her illness provided her time to say goodbye to loved ones on her own terms. She tried to appreciate every moment she had left. Though her life was too short, she was adamant that she had been lucky, with a beautiful family, good friends, and relative comfort. As she put it, “no bad things have happened to me.”
Susan’s funeral will be at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lighthouse Point on Friday, August 22, 2025 at 12:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Susan’s memory can be made to Trustbridge Hospice, www.trustbridge.com.
