Thomas W. Gibbons

Thomas Wayland Gibbons passed away on December 13, 2022 in Weston Florida, after several years of failing health. Tom was born March 5th, 1950 to Thermon and Mary Grace Gibbons in Columbia South Carolina.

Tom grew up in Charlotte and attended Garinger high school where he excelled in track, setting the state record in the half mile event. He also played football where he made all-county at split end. For twelve years Tom never missed a day of school from first grade to twelfth grade. He went to Western Carolina University on a track scholarship. After graduating from Western Carolina,Tom began a career with Eastern Airlines, later moving to United where he met many friends across the country, traveling both nationally and internationally. Some of his favorite cities that he traveled to were, London, Jackson Hole, and Amsterdam. On his travels he always made new friends and enjoyed telling stories of his trips.

Tom loved animals and always showed them compassion. He enjoyed caring for the ducks in his neighborhood. He was charismatic, always added a warm light to the room. He was a caring friend, with an understanding ear, funny jokes, and good advice that could always brighten your day. Tom had a dog named Sam, who got hit by a car. The vet recommended that he needed to be put down, but Tom would have no part of it. He nursed him back to health and Sam lived many more happy years.

Tom was preceded in death by his loving parents Thermon and Mary Grace, and his brother Terry. Survived by his two daughters who he absolutely adored Kimberly, and Lauren, siblings Anne (Terry) Ray, David (Debbie) Gibbons, Edna Gibbons, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Tom was very dedicated to his family, especially his girls, and will be missed by all.
