Guillermo Martinez, M.D., 91, of Lima, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018 at his home. He was born July 6, 1927 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba to Jose’ and Carmen (Gomez Mompo) Martinez on July 6, 1927. He married Josefina “Cuca” Rodriguez, on November 20, 1955.
Dr. Martinez graduated from the University of Havana Medical School and practiced as an OBGYN in Cuba. On October 20, 1965 he left Cuba, for Spain, with his wife, his mother, and sons Guillermo (Bill) and Carlos. In March of 1966 he arrived in Ravenna, Ohio where he redid his medical residency. He moved his family, and new son Alberto (Al), to Lima in 1968 where he began working in the emergency room at St. Rita’s and opened his private family practice. Over the years, he worked as a physician for the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Lima State Hospital, the Allen County Jail, and was Chief of Staff of the Emergency Room at the Fostoria City Hospital. He delivered the first baby born in St. Rita’s Medical Center after its 1970’s expansion.
Loving father of, Guillermo, of Sacramento, California and Alberto of Perrysburg, Ohio; grandfather of Katherine “Katy” of Orange, California and Josefina “Josie” of Perrysburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josefina “Cuca”, his son, Carlos A., and his daughter Maria Del Carmen.
He loved painting and giving his artwork away, cooking, baseball, old movies, vibrant and enthusiastic debates, and travelling. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In the last few years, he traveled to the Caribbean, enjoyed 3 weeks in Italy, and 2 weeks in Paris. This past July he visited Mt. Rushmore.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday December 1, 2018 at St. Charles Catholic with Father Kent Kaufmann as celebrant.
Calling hours will be Friday, November 30, 2018 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home.
