Robert Eugene Schafer, 91, of Lima, passed away 1:05 a.m. Thursday, morning, September 13, 2018 at the Lima Manor Nursing Home. He was born on September 6, 1927 in Lima to Charles Jacob and Edna Sarah (Tummel) Schafer. On May 15, 1948, he married Eileen M. Shortina and she survives him. Bob retired from British Petroleum in February, 1989 after 35 years of service. He was a WW II Navy veteran, a 1945 graduate of Lima South High School. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. Bob was a family man and loved his grandchildren; he and Eileen attended all of their school events. He enjoyed fishing in his younger days and he loved to play cards with his nephews. Robert is survived by his loving wife Eileen, his daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” (John) Stoll and Dianne (Tom) Birum both of Lima, his grandchildren, Jillian (Landon) Kearns of Cuyahoga Falls and Matthew (Erin Swearingen) Birum of Columbus, his great grandchildren, Sophia and Ceci Kearns of Cuyahoga Falls and a step great grandchild, Lily Kearns of Medina. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathryn Davis of Lima and Alice Hughes of Vaughnsville. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by the following siblings, Harold and Fred Schafer, Beatrice Peggs, Marie Martin, Mildred Gross, Helen Foust and Dorothy Brown. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at St. John’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery where the V.F.W. Post 1275 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites. Family and friends may call Monday, September 17 from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. at SIFERD-ORIANS FUNERAL HOME , where a parish wake service will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to his family. Online condolences can be left at
