Kimm Dekker, Cabernet connoisseur, flip-cup champion, cribbage master, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015.
Kimm looked younger than she was, and she loved this about herself. There were only a select few that really knew her age. This drove her friends crazy and no matter how many times her friends asked, she would never entertain even the slyest of inquiries. Her friend Jenn made a game of it but in the end Kimm won, she took it to the grave with her.
Kimm loved to cook but she was no Paula Dean. One Thanks-mas, because she was out of milk, she decided to use Vanilla Soymilk in the mashed potatoes instead. She did not care about this kind of thing. The potatoes had a hint of sweetness that Kimm thought was "different but tasty". Kimm also was good at coming up with out-of-the ordinary stuffing recipes. Kimm loved to pull whatever nuts and fruits she had in the pantry and fridge and work them into the stuffing. Two things Kimm had down though was her pumpkin pie and deviled eggs, which she called "doubled” eggs, because Satan was not getting any glory from her eggs. Hands down, she made the best pumpkin pie and doubled eggs.
Kimm left behind her two daughters; Abigail Browning and Erika Gorath. She also left them with the ingrained habit of mispronouncing a few words. Kimm loved graded "parm-EE-shin" cheese on her spaghetti, and she always added fresh, chopped, peppers to her "m-arrrr-in-arrr-ah" sauce. And, for as long as her daughters can remember, she put emphasis on the two syllables in the famous soup company's name: "Camp-bell". To this day, Kimm's daughters are trying to replace the tendency for mispronunciation of these words in their language.
Kimm enjoyed her two grandsons very much: Alton "AJ" Browning (4) and Holden Gorath (1). She kept AJ's favorite treats on hand for when he came to visit. AJ and "Momsey" as he called her, would cuddle up on the couch and watch Tom and Jerry together. Kimm just adored her youngest grandson, Holden, as well. Holden reciprocated her love, as he would only let a few people hold him, and she was one. Kimm adored Holden's big smile and glowing personality which is apparent even at his young age.
Kimm also took pride in keeping the pantry streamlined and organized. Kimm was especially on top of the cereal situation when her kids were younger. Kimm owned a few bulk plastic containers that she would use to store cereal in. The moment a box of cereal was 1/2 full, she would take two, three, even four different cereals and add them to the one big container. A few times in her daughter's lives, growing up, Kimm allowed them to pick a sugary cereal as a special treat. Other than that, Kimm only allowed Cherrios, Rice Krispys and Raisin Bran in the house. Often, Kimm's daughters, Erika and Abbi, would go to the kitchen looking forward to a bowl of Cocoa Crispies to find that they had been added to a large plastic container along with the Cheerios and Rice Krispies. You would think that easily enough you could get through the strata of cereal to get to what you wanted, but that was not possible because Kimm thought it necessary to shake the container after adding the cereal.
Kimm was not one to collect knick knacks, however she did somehow accumulate a good number of Swiffer Sweepers and hexagon shaped #2 pencils. These were the only pencils she would use.
Kimm had a lifelong affair with doubled eggs, potato salad, cheese and crackers and ginger snaps. If you were a guest at Kimm's house, you were served cheese and crackers along with a glass of Red Wine. Kimm had multiple wine memberships as she enjoyed the lower tannin Cabernets. Kimm's favorite wineries were Rombauer, D'Art, Tobin and James, Harney and Casque. Kimm's social nature made her a favorite at the wineries, often she would be invited to taste from the barrels with the winemakers. You could also find her bottling her own wines.
Kimm despised garden gnomes, and because of this her family continually taunted her with gnomes. Gnomes would show up at her door with notes in their hands. Gnomes would nap in her underwear drawer. Gnomes would disappear from her lawn and return the next year with friends. All her gnomes were friendly and showed her love despite her coldness toward them.
With the gnomes help, Kimm enjoyed tending to her rose bushes. She was skilled at pruning them back in such a way to encourage the most flowers. Kimm loved to bring the cut flowers inside to decorate her table with.
Kimm's memorial will be held on Friday, June 19th from 1-4pm at the Theater on the Whitney High School Campus. 701 Wildcat Blvd. Rocklin, CA
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Kimm Dekker Memorial AVID Scholarship Fund. AVID is designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. Kimm was the head of the AVID program at Whitney High school up until her medical leave. She also headed up the Math Department at Whitney High School, and enjoyed mentoring kids. Kimm was lucky to make a living doing what she loved, helping kids through education.
