Shirley Baird was the third of five children born to Alene Howland Baird and Uri Lee Baird. She attended Fremont Elementary School and Calipatria High School, located in Calipatria, CA, graduating in 1952. She was very popular in school and active in many extra curricular activities. In the fall of 1952, she became an employee of the Calipatria School District, working at Fremont Elementary School until 1954. In September of that year, she transferred to the Calipatria High School where she was a Secretary until June, 1959. Shirley was a member of the Calipatria Community Church until 1954 when she converted to Catholicism and became a parishioner at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Calipatria, CA. On May 23, 1958 she married Paul Lavon Carl in the same Church.

From 1976-1986, Shirley worked in the business office of University of San Diego High School, in San Diego, CA. She then worked briefly at Erwin Escrow Co., Inc. From
1987-1992, she became payroll and personnel director for Catholic Charities in downtown San Diego. After her retirement in 1992, she was a volunteer for the City of San Diego Police Department, working at their Clairemont Community Center Store Front.
In the summer of 2002, Shirley and Paul moved to Lincoln, CA to be nearer their children. Paul died in 2008 after battling prostate cancer.
Shirley is best described as a multi-talented individual, known for being a beautiful seamstress, in addition to her knitting and crocheting works of art. She, on many occasions, completed minor home repairs, including painting and wall papering. She was a member of the choir at the Calipatria Community Church and the St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, and her beautiful voice brought joy to many. She was a volunteer at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church assisting in their CCD program as well as Bingo. Her hobbies were golf, walking, travel, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She always maintained a positive outlook on life, and her strong faith enabled her to deal with life's challenges such as multiple bouts of cancer. She will always be an inspiration to her siblings and other family members.
Shirley is survived by sisters Joyce Burkholder, Greta Erwin, brother Robert Baird, her son, Michael Carl (Susan) and daughter, Lisa Bozzoli (Tim), grandchildren, David Carl (Michelle), Christina Sillman (Steve), Victoria Beauchamp (Bob), Laura Smith, and nine great grandchildren.
Family and Friends are invited to an 11:00 AM funeral mass on Friday August 14, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 280 Oak Tree Lane, Lincoln, CA. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, 416 6th Street, Lincoln, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
