He was born on March 11, 1943 in San Francisco and raised in Galt. He had fond memories of attending a one-room schoolhouse, the Colony School in Alta Mesa, where he made lifelong friends. Thomas was proud of his Irish ancestry. He was Baptized Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and practiced his faith quietly through his life.
After serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Thomas attended and graduated from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He had a long and distinguished career with the State of California Department of Corrections as a Parole Agent. His goal was always to protect the community and to give parolees the support to succeed by giving them counsel, and helping them to find housing and jobs.
Thomas was a loving and attentive father and considered his family the greatest blessing of his life. He followed his son’s activities with constant support and encouragement, rarely missing an event. This devotion to them continued throughout his life and was returned with love. His boundless love was not limited only to family or even humans- from dairy cows on the family farm to the numerous cats and dogs that were his companions in life, he showed care to all the creatures of creation.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra; his beloved sons and cherished daughters in law, Steven & Dianna, James & Lauren; his treasured grandchildren, Cillian (Josh), Kendra (Dylan), Hailey and Lance. He is also survived by his brother and sister in law, John and Fran Cannon.
