Alvin Charles Pomajzl, 87, of Crete, Nebraska, passed away February 6, 2024 in Waverly, surrounded by his family. He was born July 30, 1936 in Wilber, Nebraska, to Lumir and Lillian (Tenopir) Pomajzl.
If you had the privilege of knowing Alvin, you were probably greeted with a hug and treated to a few stories of his many adventures, family, and friends that were evidence of a life well-lived.
Alvin’s journey began on the family farm between Crete and Wilber. He attended country school and
Crete High School before joining and proudly serving in the Air Force from 1954 to 1957 as an Airman First Class. He worked at Art Stueber Propane Supply, Western Product Company, and farmed with his father before taking a job at the Crete Mills in 1960, where he worked until his retirement in 2001.
After retiring, you would often find Alvin enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee with family or friends (the Burger King group was a favorite), serving with the American Legion, shooting the moon in a game of pitch, traveling, lending a helping hand to family and friends, and telling stories about cars, adventures, and family history.
As much as he enjoyed these hobbies, by far, Alvin’s greatest source of pride and joy was his family. A blind date set up by his future brother-in-law led to a life-long legacy of love that grew between Alvin and his wife, Rosemary Kay (Johnson). They were married at Grace United Methodist Church in Crete April 12, 1963. Through Rosemary’s faith and influence, Alvin was baptized at Grace March 21, 1965 and later by immersion in 1979. Through the ups and downs of life, they were always there for each other, right up to the very end. They have left a powerful example to their family and friends of the incredible power and beauty of true and lasting love.
Together, Alvin and Rosemary devoted themselves to raising five children: Renee, Connie, Roxanne, Cindy, and Daniel. He always made time for family and found great delight in attending as many events and activities for every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild as he could. He always told each one how proud he was of them and how much he loved them.
Whenever family or friends needed help with a project too big to handle, he and Rosemary were often the first ones there and the last ones to leave, bringing all the needed tools from his well-equipped garage along with a wealth of knowledge in how to complete the task at hand.
As his journey this side of heaven has come to an end, his presence will be missed greatly by family and friends, but his legacy of loving others generously in word and deed is already on display in the next generations who are already following his example. As his journey continues on the other side of heaven, we know he invites you to join him there where he’ll be waiting to welcome you with his trademark hug.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Rosemary of Crete; children Renee (Chris) Fitzsimmons of Lincoln,
