Alvin was the son of Charles and Augusta (Kasparek) Zach. He was one of seven children, and he attended a one-room county school and Wilber Public School.
When he was finished with his schooling, Alvin worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 through 1955. After his discharge, he completed training in auto body repair under the G.I. Bill.
Alvin first worked for his brother Bob in Wilber at his auto body shop then later managed the auto body shop for Misle Chevrolet (now Husker Auto) in Lincoln. During this time, he had three children with his first wife.
On September 4, 1975, he married Phyllis J. Enderle in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1976, they moved from Lincoln to Reno, Nevada, where Alvin began working for Filper Magnussen; a company that developed and manufactured equipment for other companies. As an equipment developer, Alvin was part of several patents for new equipment and traveled around the world demonstrating the equipment his company developed and sold. Alvin retired in 1994, and in 1995 he and Phyllis moved back to Lincoln to be closer to his family.
Alvin found enjoyment in fishing and hunting, and he always took great satisfaction in creating things with his hands. He collected coins and also enjoyed gambling in Las Vegas. He loved animals, especially his cats, Missy, Lucky, and Rusty.
