Ann Louise Horner Hoback passed away on October 28, 2026. Ann was born in Friend, Nebraska on November 2,1936, to Ernest E. Horner and Ruth Stuemky Horner. Ann spent most of her childhood with her siblings and parents on the family farm in the Exeter/Milligan/Friend countryside. She attended country school through the 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Friend High School in 1954. After graduation, Ann attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and Bryan School of Nursing. It was during her time at Bryan School of Nursing that she met the love of her life, Ronald D. Hoback. Nursing students in that era were not allowed to be married, so after 18 months of nursing school, she left to marry her prince and they wed on November 17, 1956.
The next 31 years were spent in the flurry of being blessed with babies (Alan, Laura, and Larry), raising them (whew!), new jobs, new homes, and new cities, and adding daughter-in-law, Pam, son-in-law, Jeff, and first grandchild, Ginny to the family. All this while maintaining close family ties, fostering friendships, and above all, serving the Lord. Ann worked for the Lincoln Regional Center, first as a nursing assistant and later as a medical records technician.
In 1981, having now become “empty nesters”, Ron and Ann moved to Kentucky where they formed more lifelong friendships and a beloved church home. During these years, Ann and Ron enjoyed hosting visits from family and friends from many different states. They added another daughter-in-law, Teresa, and 5 more grandchildren to the family. Ann was a volunteer for the Hardin County Rape Crisis Center and was employed as a medical transcriptionist at a busy cardiology office in Elizabethtown.
After retirement and diagnosis of the first of many health battles for Ann, they settled in Crete as their forever home. In Crete, they followed their grandchildren’s school and extracurricular activities, and developed many wonderful, loving friendships with their brothers and sisters in Christ at Crete Berean.
Ann enjoyed many leisure-time activities. Ann was a wonderful cook, having learned at her mother’s side, and assumed this role at the age of 11 for the Horner family of 12. Besides visiting with dear ones near and far, Ann’s greatest joys were singing praises of the Lord, sharing the gospel and her own personal journey of faith. In addition, Ann loved babies and small children and rejoiced at being a helper for vacation bible school for many years. Ann also spent many an afternoon enjoying the reading of historical fiction, the Bible, and other Christian books, and enjoyed occasional Bridge and Pitch battles with friends or family in the evenings.
Survivors include husband, Ron, children, Alan, Laura (husband, Jeff) Wooters, Larry Hoback (wife, Mindi), grandchildren, Brian Hoback, Christyne (husband, Bob Mounce), Alex Wooters (wife, Jodie Smith), Angela (husband, Andrew Arnold), and Ethan Wooters (Candice Crider), Madison (husband, Cody Robinson, and Mazie Grace Hoback.
