Dale D. Nurnberg was born at home November 2, 1941, the last of three children born to Robert and Louise Nurnberg. He grew up on a farm in the Hoskins, Nebraska, area. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoskins.
Dale graduated from Winside High School in 1959 and Norfolk Junior College in 1961. He was active in sports at both schools.
He met his future wife, Marilyn Gutshall, while at NJC. They were married August 26, 1962, and both graduated from Wayne State Teacher's College in 1963. He earned his MBA at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1976.
Dale and Marilyn moved to Lincoln after graduation in 1963 where he was employed in the home office of Midwest Life Insurance Company.
In 1966, Dale received his draft notice and enlisted in the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. While serving in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader from 1967 to 1968, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He was awarded the Bronze Star for serving in a combat zone and was honorably discharged in April 1969. He served his country proudly.
He returned to Midwest Life Insurance Company until they were sold and consolidated. He joined Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation and Farm Bureau Insurance Company in 1989 and retired in 2006 as Senior Vice President Human Resources.
Dale and Marilyn were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Nicole Leigh, August 22, 1979, bringing her home from the hospital on their 17th wedding anniversary. He was a devoted father and in later years, an awesome 'Papa' to his granddaughter, Alexandria ('Alex') Jaye. He played 'Barbies' with her and spent endless hours caring for her throughout the years. Because of this, 'Papa' and 'Alex' developed a very special bond with each other.
Dale and Marilyn were always involved in children/youth activities in the churches they attended. He was currently serving with the American Legion Honor Guard, Post 3, after joining them in November 2009. After retirement, he and Marilyn provided food and helped serve meals to Habitat for Humanity workers and also to guests at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach for many years.
Through the years, Dale was a devoted family man, liked sweets (especially pecan pie with vanilla ice cream), Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers, dancing, building snowmen and wearing flag T-shirts.
Dale passed away October 17, 2026, at the age of 84 years.
