

David Clarence Backes passed away February 16, 2017 at the age of 71. He was born in Humphrey, Nebraska December 2, 1945 to Edward T. and Clara Albracht Backes. David, the youngest of ten children, grew up on farms near Lindsay and St. Ben, NE. He attended St. Bonaventure High School in Columbus, NE. David was a member of the Shrine Bowl Football Team in 1964 graduating that same year. He continued his education at Kearney State College where he received his Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. While at Kearney State, David was president of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity as well as a member of the college’s football, track and debate teams. David began his teaching career at St. Paul, NE., and then taught at Waverly, NE. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching World History, and being the Assistant Varsity Wrestling coach. To the disappointment of his high school students, David left the education profession to pursue other interests. He became a top salesman for Pella Windows and Doors of Lincoln, retiring from there after a long and successful career. David’s interests included woodworking, reading, politics, fishing, and attending sporting events with family and friends. He also was proud to have served as a Denton Village Board Trustee. Most of all, David loved spending time with his sons, other family members and friends. David is survived by his youngest son Michael, Lincoln, NE.; sisters Joan Kurtenbach, Joyce Wieser, Marilyn (Bill) Haney, Carolyn (Ken) Cielocha all of Columbus, NE.; brothers Duane (Lois) of Lindsay, NE.; Earl (Lenore) of Columbus, NE.; Kenny (Jane) of Humphrey, NE.; Bill (Ginny) of Milford, NE.; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. David was preceded in death by his oldest son Jonathan, parents, and sister, Edna Backes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, Nebraska. A rosary prayer service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska at a later date.
