At the age of 16, she was put on a train and traveled to Hesston, Kansas, to live with her aunt and uncle, Clifford and Lillian Stutzman. After completing high school, she attended nurse's training. On April 13, 1952, she married Dean Kuhns. Dean and Dorothy raised their two daughters Deanne and Devonne in Lincoln Nebraska.
Dorothy was a wife, nurse, mother and caregiver to many, but most importantly she was a child of God. In 1971, they started attending Indian Hills Community Church where she continued serving into her late 80’s.
She is survived by daughters Deanne Harms and Devonne (Markus) Abebe, grandchildren, Shannae Moss, Marquez Abebe, Kay (Shaun) Fischer, Joseph (Alexis) Abebe, Joshua Abebe, Malachi Abebe, Marytza Abebe and Isaak Harms as well as 4 great grandkids, sister Vivian Eyster and sister-in-law Diane Reil.
Preceding her in death were her parents John and Elvera Reil, husband Dean Kuhns, grandchildren Matthew and Nathaniel Harms, brothers Dennis and Glen Reil, sister Violet Reil and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Indian Hills Community Church at 1000 S 84th St, Lincoln, Nebraska. Livestreaming of the service is available at https://www.facebook.com/indianhillscommunitychurch
