Gary was a valued Adjunct Faculty member to the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.  He was kind person and always had a smile each time he would come to the administrative office. I enjoyed getting to know Gary over the years, mostly during time at the daily coffee breaks and department activities. He was a friend and I am sad to learn of his passing. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to all family members. Rest in God's love  Gary.

I grew up in Hay Springs with Gary's younger brother, Bryan, and knew Gary only a little bit until we kept running into each other at Thursday night golf league at Holmes Golf Course over the past several years.  I got to know him mostly by talking about things over a beer after those rounds.  Gary was a great academic, a dedicated father and husband, and one of the most humble men I've met-- he could always poke fun at himself, which is a rare talent these days.  I'll miss him.  We send our deepest condolences to all the Varvel family.

I knew Gary from many years of playing noon hour basketball together.  He was a very fine man and I extend my sympathies to his family.  Several members of the noon hour basketballers have died, but Gary is the youngest that I played with.  I am very sorry to learn of his passing.

I have always enjoyed working with and learning from Gary Varvel.  His talents were appreciated by this Extension Educator working with Agronomy.

My condolences to the Varvel family!  Although Gary and I grew up more than 300 miles apart and in a different decade, we shared a common Nebraska bond that developed first in Keim Hall in the 80s and then more fully later when we enjoyed opportunities to talk about corn, carbon, and Cornhusker football at annual agronomy meetings.  Gary's laugh may have been short, but stout.  His humor was embedded in the oddities of the way the world developed.  Gary was a faithful colleague and will be remembered!  May he rest in the peace of God!

What a great example of a father, grandfather, husband & uncle.  I so appreciate my brief times to discuss agriculture, cornhusker football and family.  My heart is with each of you as you grieve this tremendous loss.  I pray in the days ahead you can carry on his legacy through these wonderful memories.  

Gary and I overlapped a bit as graduate students and then he was in the USDA while I was a faculty member at the Concord Experiment Station. I would stop by his office when I came to Lincoln to chat and discuss agronomic issues. The most memorable time I stopped by was the morning that the Challenger exploded. I was standing in his doorway when the video feed showed the accident. My sincere condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences on Gary's passing. I will miss his geniality and sarcasm. All of my conversations with him were usually filled with laughter and occasionally with beverages. He was an excellent colleague and ready to help as he could.
