Genevieve Elaine (Olson) Heusinkvelt was born on the synchronistic date of 01-23-45 to Ivan and Mabel Olson. She learned to share immediately because her twin sister Geneva had been born a few minutes earlier, as well as an older brother and sisters. She grew up in Hickman Nebraska amongst a large extended family nearby. Genevieve graduated from Hickman High School in 1963 and was offered a college track scholarship but she decided to run into marriage with Oren Heusinkvelt on August 3, 1963. She got plenty of exercise caring for three children and growing a large garden. She enjoyed sewing (even tiny doll clothes), going to garage sales and camping, but hated snakes of any kind. Her enjoyment of cooking produced legendary cinnamon rolls, rhubarb jelly, cream puffs and hard rock candy. Genevieve began getting paid to cook while employed at the Firth Café, then at Norris High School for 25 years. She and Oren operated the Dairy Treat Ice Cream Shop for ten years, where they got to know many wonderful people. Genevieve was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, which allowed her to forget all the terrible things her children did growing up. She leaves nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren to carry on the legacy. Genevieve passed into eternity on July 8, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Rosemary. A rosary followed by visitation for Genevieve will be held Friday, July 12, 2024 at 6:00 PM at St. James Catholic Church, 155 N Lincoln Ave, Cortland, NE 68331. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are designated to St. James Catholic Church in Cortland, NE. Arrangements entrusted to Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Lincoln, NE.
