

George C. Holdren, 91, of Lincoln, died November 30, 2015. George was born November 20, 1924, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to Irvin and Christine (Peterson) Holdren. He lost his father, Irvin, soon after birth. In 1937 his mother married John Salton who was an important person in his life. George graduated from Marathon, Iowa, high school.
He attended one year at University of Iowa before enlisting in the Army. George served in the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions and fought in both the Battle of the Bulge and crossing the Rhine in Operation Varsity in Europe during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant. He participated in the New York City Victory Parade down 5th Avenue.
After the war, he completed his B.S.C degree from the University of Iowa in 1948. He earned an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. George began teaching at the University of Nebraska in 1955, earning a Nebraska C.P.A. certificate in 1957 and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Nebraska Business College in 1961.
He continued teaching courses in accounting and business at the University of Nebraska until his retirement in 1994.
He received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and was also an active member of many accounting associations.
George married Dorothy J. Sparr on June 13, 1948. They had three children: George, Jr (Chris), Greg, and Susan.
George was an active member in The Presbyterian Church and other civic organizations. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, fishing, sports, good food, and bridge.
Survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy; sons Chris (Paula Kokesch) and Greg (Maureen Mundy) and daughter Susan (Bill) Andelt, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Ida Beth (Chuck) Freitag, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Donna (Salton) Smersh.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 5, at Eastridge Presbyterian Church, 1135 Eastridge Dr., Lincoln. Private burial service. Memorials to Eastridge Presbyterian Church, University of Nebraska Foundation, or a veteran's charity of your choice.
