George attended and graduated from Ashland HS then joined the US Army USAR in February 1957. He was honorably discharged in February 1963, 2 of those years were active duty. After being discharged from the Army he began his career in Lincoln, NE at the phone company (LTT) as a supervisor of the mailroom and payphone collections, he was employed there for over 40 years. This is where he met the love of his life Judith (Judy) Swenson. They were married April 20th, 1963, and had celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss until Judy’s passing on August 11th, 2023. They have three kids, Shari, Gary and Jenny, all raised in a home they built and lived in for over 50 years in Lincoln, NE. They became very close with several of their neighbors they considered and loved like family. They had several impromptu driveway gatherings with a few cocktails and lots of laughs.
George was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He volunteered when his son Gary joined, eventually becoming Scout Master! He loved it so much he stayed very active for several years after Gary achieved Eagle Scout. He really enjoyed helping the boys earn their badges and taking them on camping adventures.
George was very close to his sister Carol; they kept in touch on a regular basis throughout the years, always bantering back and forth about who would pay the check when they went out to dinner. She graciously hosted his family’s vacations at her home down in Kansas on a yearly basis and was always the best host! They loved each other dearly; she will miss George’s teasing immensely along with their frequent visits. He was also close to all his first cousins that were some of his best friends throughout his life, always celebrating special occasions together including Father’s Day.
Being such a family man he was also very involved in Judy’s very large family. This included several large family gatherings throughout the years on all the major holidays, bowling trips that turned into family vacations and time spent with them at the cabin on the Platte River. Judy had 10 siblings, along with numerous nieces and nephews that all called him Uncle George, he loved her family like his own and loved spending time with them.
Another huge part of his life was spent with his Shrine family. George and Judy attended 3-4 activities per week at times. He was very active in the Clown unit attending many circuses and parades throughout the years and we can’t forget to mention how much he loved the Oasis! It was never a dull moment with those clowns and their shenanigans! On a serious note, George served the Sesostris Shrine with great dedication, including his year as Potentate in 2001 and many years of faithful service as recorder. His leadership, commitment and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
George always had a smile on his face, loved to tease and would do anything for anyone without question. He was loved by all and never met a stranger!
