Ida was born in Reichartshausen, Germany, the 3rd of seven children born to Gustav and Rosa Ziegler. She endured hard times during World War ll and developed a survival spirit which was demonstrated throughout her life. Ida was a bright student who especially enjoyed writing and poetry. As a teenager, she worked while going to school and was a seamstress in a tailor shop. She continued the art of making clothing as a wife and mother. Every member of the family wore her handmade creations. After graduating, she moved to Heidelberg and was a nanny to several American families who loved her.
In December 1956, she met the love of her life, Herbert E. Mussmann, at a mutual friend’s wedding. He was in the U.S. military and they had their first date on New Year’s Eve, 1956, and were married February 4, 1958.
Ida and Herb raised two children, Ken and Charleen. Ida was proud to be a homemaker and her family happily indulged in the outstanding results of her cooking and baking efforts. Even though moving many times was part of military life, Ida always created a welcoming home where there was laughter and love. Throughout her life she remained close to the many friends she made along life’s way.
When Herb retired, he and Ida took trips together, enjoyed gardening, having fun with their grandson, hosting family on holidays, and relaxing on their outside glider chair at the end of the day. After celebrating 64 years of marriage, Herb passed away November 29, 2022.
Ida was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her wit, determination, and generous heart will always be remembered.
Ida was confirmed in Germany in March 1947. Since 1979, she and Herb were members of Trinity Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Lincoln, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the church at https://trinityoflincoln.org/give.
She is survived by her two sisters, Inge and Rosel; son Ken and his wife Joan; daughter Charleen and her husband Dave; grandson Tanner and his wife Diana; and nieces and nephews.
