Jim was born in Friend, NE to Robert and Amelia Lawson. With sisters Sandra and Betty, the family moved to Lincoln when Jim was 5 years old. He met his lifetime love, Wanda Hoffart, at Whitter Jr. High and graduated from Lincoln High School. After graduation, he and Wanda married; a month later he joined the U.S. Army serving in the 82nd Airborne unit. Upon returning from Germany, he worked at American Stores, then Cooks Foods for almost 40 years. Starting in the 70’s Jim was proud to referee high school football with his refereeing career culminating in being selected to ref the 25th Annual Shrine Bowl. Jim’s biggest loves, though, were always Wanda and his family. His son, Hugh, was born in 1971, bringing about a change from reffing to watching and supporting all of Hugh’s activities. Jim was always active in his free time; playing softball, racquetball, biking, washing the Fiero and walking his beloved dogs. The next adventure started with the birth of his two grandkids, Brooke and James. He spent many seasons riding bikes to Havelock Park, enjoying backyard sunshine, pool, and popsicle time, cheering at soccer games, and entertained by James’ theater and choir performances. Along with annual trips to Vegas, Jim’s retirement years were spent traveling with Wanda and visiting his family in Arizona, Georgia and Lake of the Ozarks. There were a lot of cards, Husker games, jet ski rides, and country music shows. Winters in Arizona meant pickleball, dancing with Wanda, and enjoying his morning coffee with friends. He shared his love of pickleball and sweet treats with his family, including Mocha Joe, his favorite granddog.
Jim is remembered for his kind heart, big smile, and fun-loving spirit. We can all remember when he made our day brighter and reminded us “two bounces!!!”
Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wanda; son, Hugh and wife Stacy; and grandchildren, Brooke (Jacob Sautter) and James.
Many thanks and love to our caregivers including Sam, the St. Croix Hospice team, and our Hollyhock Circle neighbors.
