Janet Marie Manthei, 77, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and servant of the Lord passed away to eternal rest on Friday, September 21, 2018 after 2 ½ years of being treated for ovarian cancer. Janet was born on February 2, 1941 in Port Huron, MI to Cecil and Betty (Brimmell) Vollstaedt. Growing up in St. Clair, MI, she graduated from St. Clair High School in 1958. She attended IBM school in Detroit, MI and moved to Lansing, MI in 1960 where she was employed by the Michigan Hospital Association.
She is preceded in death by her beloved parents Cecil and Betty Vollstaedt, mother and father-in-law Irma and Albert Manthei; brother-in-law Paul Gerhardt and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gayle and Linda Manthei.
She met her husband through Gamma Delta, a Lutheran College Youth Organization and was united in marriage to Wayne A. Manthei on September 1, 1962 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Clair. MI.
Janet was an avid gardener and expanded her flower gardens every year and enjoyed the outdoors. She spent her leisure time cross stitching, sewing, baking for her family and golfing. Moving from Illinois to Nebraska in 1987, she became a member of the Pine Lake Women’s Golf League and Lincoln Welcome Wagon. She also enjoyed watching Nebraska Women’s Basketball games and watching her grandchildren play in high school soccer, softball, football and baseball games. She was a long time member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Christ Lutheran Cheer Circle. She was active for 25 years delivering altar flowers to the sick and home bound for Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln and a member of Christ Stitchers.
During her years of marriage she lived in Glen Ellyn, IL, Arlington Heights, IL, Lawrence Township, New Jersey, Sleepy Hollow, Illinois and Lincoln, NE. In retirement she lived part-time for fifteen years at their log cabin in Shell Knob, MO on Table Rock Lake spending leisure time swimming, fishing and boating with friends and family on the lake.
Janet leaves behind her husband Wayne of Lincoln, daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Andrew Traver of Stafford, VA; son and daughter-in-law Jeffry and Elizabeth Manthei of Medina, OH; daughter and son-in-law Peggy and Keith Merkel of Lincoln, NE and six grandchildren; Anthony, Dominic and Vincent Traver; Allie and Brock Merkel; Blake Manthei. Sister and brother-in-law MaryLou and Richard Frendt of Gregory, MI; sister-in-law Donna Gerhardt of Glen Ellyn, IL; 9 nieces and nephews and 18 grand nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church 4325 Sumner St. in Lincoln. Visitation with family one hour prior to services at church. Interment Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials to Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
