Jerry lived a rich and joyful life filled with love, laughter, and service to others. Known for his authentic heart, strong values, and keen sense of humor, he was a guiding presence to family and friends. Nobody could have lived a fuller life even through challenges and victories. He was one tough softie.
A proud Nebraskan through and through, Jerry never missed a Nebraska Football or Nebraska Volleyball game and was a fan of Notre Dame. He was engaged in the Pius Thunderbolts for daughter Deborah, and the East High Spartans for daughter Maureen. His sense of leadership in Nebraska was a significant part of his life, and he made time to start the South Lincoln Track Club and Little Green programs—roles that brought him great purpose and pride. Whether on the sidelines, press box or in the stands, Jerry's voice and encouragement was a standout. His enthusiasm gave voice to more than sports—even as a slam poetry fan at Lincoln High.
He was also a devoted horse racing enthusiast and, at one point, a proud owner of a racing dog. He didn’t bet the horses later in life, but he was known for choosing them by clever names and by the beauty of their physical athleticism. He loved “Heartland” on Netflix, “Law and Order,” all the Chicago shows, “Wicked Tuna”, cooking shows and every sport imaginable. He enjoyed theater, musicals, and film as well.
Jerry's sense of humor, warm presence, and love of storytelling were legendary. He was the kind of man who made everyone feel like they belonged, were accepted.
Jerry is survived by his loving daughters, Deborah T McGinn, Mike Pittz, Maureen A (Nick) McGinn Palmer; sister, Donna (Richard) McGinn Hill; brother, Jack (Donna) McGinn; grandchildren, Allison McMahon and partner Jake Kanthack, MaryAnne Warner and partner Collin Wise, Samuel Warner and partner Meagan Morningstar; great-grandchildren, Theo Wise, Beau Wise, Remi Wise, Lumen Warner, Winslow Warner; granddog, Spinelli McGinn; many other relatives and friends. Jerry is preceded in death by Mary A McGinn and Georgia Borcher.
A memorial celebration of Jerry’s life will be held 3:00 PM on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the Lincoln Firefighters Hall, 241 Victory Lane, Lincoln, NE 68528.
As Jerry requested, there will be an open microphone for brief stories and shared laughter. Please dress casually and wear green—his favorite color—to honor him.
