John J. Dahm of Lincoln, Nebraska, died March 4, 2026 at the age of 86 after a brief illness. John built a life defined by scholarship, public service, and a deep commitment to human dignity. His journey took his family through Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, and ultimately Nebraska where he became known for his long career and leadership in corrections.
John distinguished himself early as an historian and professor at the University of Missouri–Rolla, reflecting the intellectual seriousness that marked his career. There, he began teaching college-level courses for inmates in the Missouri Penitentiary and later became director of one of the nation’s first education-release projects granting a college-level degree for inmates still serving their sentences. He later served as Director of Community Services for the Missouri Department of Corrections.
In 1979, he began a 33-year career with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. Over the years, he held senior leadership roles including assistant director and warden at several Nebraska correctional institutions. He completed his career as warden of the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, championing family-centered rehabilitation and a correctional center nursery program for new mothers and their babies born during incarceration. Throughout his life, he was active in state and national correctional justice efforts as well as church and community organizations. John was a steady administrator and compassionate reformer who was always willing to offer those in his charge a second chance.
John led an exceptional life that had a positive impact on those he encountered both professionally and personally. He will be deeply missed by his wife of sixty years, two sons and their spouses, five grandchildren, and many family and friends.
Arrangements for services are pending. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family requests donations be made in John’s name to the Memorial Fund of Southern Heights Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
