John H. George was born on December 22, 1945 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Lincoln High, then he went on to obtain all of his advanced degrees from UNL. Those degrees were a BA in January of 1970, an MA in July of 1976, and his Ph.D. in December of 1981. He met his future wife Gayle in 1966 when he was a patient at Lincoln General Hospital, it was love at first sight. They got married on December 9th, 1967. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past December.
John went to work at LMEF (Lincoln Medical Education Foundation) in The Family Practice Residency Program, he was heavily involved in ACLS and ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support). Before that, he worked for the Nebraska Regional Program where he traveled to hospitals all over Nebraska and South Dakota. John was a medical educator and he loved doing it, he was instrumental in national and international surgical training throughout the world. Other professional positions included Physician Liaison at LGH. He worked at John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii, MCO in Toledo, Ohio, Penn State Milton S. Hershey School of Medicine, A.T. Still School of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. Positions held were Curriculum Development and Evaluation, Associate Sr. Dean, Advisor to Presidents and Deans. He also served on the board of directors at Tabitha.
John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lincoln. He was also a member of the Izaak Walton League Welfare Society. He was musically talented, being part of the LHS orchestra, UNL symphony orchestra. Percussion was his specialty and he taught drums at Dietz House of Music. John enjoyed scuba diving, hunting, shooting, reading and reading the funnies, military history, and camping. He loved to make people laugh. John loved his family dearly, survivors include his wife Gayle, his son Scott (Shannon), and his daughter Adrienne (Ricky). He also had many grandchildren and they are Riley, Austin, Grant, Eli, Harrisen, and Liam; brothers-in-law, Les Hugelman and Larry Hugelman. Preceded in death by John J. and Amalia George.
John will be cremated, a celebration of life visitation with family and friends on January 11th, 2024 from 4:30 pm to 7 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. The memorial service will be 10:00 am Friday, January 12th, 2024 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home with an inurnment following at Lincoln Memorial Park, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska.
