Kaylan loved children and was attending Southeast Community College, planning to attend UNL in the fall to major in Elementary Education. She wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. From an early age she knew she wanted to be a teacher. With all the teacher supplies set up as a classroom in her room, she and her best friend Jayda would play teacher for hours with Kaylan always having to be the teacher.
Kaylan was a 2019 graduate of Lincoln Southwest High School where she played softball and enjoyed socializing with her teammates and friends. Kaylan started playing softball when she was six. She loved watching her big brother play baseball and she knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She played select softball with the Screaming Eagles and then the Nebraska Swingers where she played mostly first base (with the exception of that one time our little leftie played catcher and attempted to throw the ball back to the pitcher and hit the batter in the back of the helmet). Her summer and fall were filled with countless trips to Doris Bair Softball Complex in Lincoln. She also traveled out of state to Oklahoma City during the Women’s College World Series and to Kansas City and Chicago to play as well. Kaylan loved spending countless hours on the field with her teammates. Her smile and laughter lit up the field and she was always there to support her teammates with encouraging words of immense positivity.
Kaylan loved Jesus with her whole heart, and she accepted Jesus as her Savior at an early age. She was a faithful attendee of Lincoln Berean Church. She was involved in City Impact’s Bible Club and Impact Leadership Academy through her middle school and high school years. She also attended several Bible Study classes with her mom on Wednesday nights where she grew to have a deeper understanding of God’s love and sacrifices for her. A family ritual was developed to stop at Jimmy Johns before church on Wednesday night, where she would faithfully get the #15 with BBQ chips and a Dr Pepper.
Besides God, her family and friends were the most important thing in her life. In her free time, Kaylan loved to watch movies with her little brother Jaxon. She loved to make Chef Boyardee pizza and tacos only when her older brother Dylan wasn’t home because she knew that he would eat it all. She was always on her phone listening to music, Snapchatting with her friends and checking social media. But, one of her most favorite things to do was watch her brothers play baseball. There was seldom ever a game she didn’t get to.
Kaylan worked at Shopko during high school. After high school, she came full circle as a student in elementary school to becoming a teacher at La Petite Daycare Academy. She adored working with the children in her classes and the love that was shown to her by the other teachers was such a blessing to her.
Kaylan is survived by her parents Jerry and Stacy, brothers Dylan and Jaxon all of Lincoln, Grandmother Louise Umbenhower of Aurora, Grandmother Sandra (Thomas) Fieldgrove of Grand Island, Grandfather John Streff of Grand Island, several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her Grandfathers Ira “Ike” Elwood and Delmar Umbenhower.
