Laurence J. Fountain

Over the years, he became known to family as Larry and to many friends as Pierre. He was the third of four children. As a young boy, his family relocated to Waverly, Nebraska. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1967 and went on to attend Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln to play college football. He was drafted into the Army in 1969.

Larry served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam conflict. When he returned to Lincoln he began a long career with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, working as a heavy equipment operator and in track maintenance. After 35 years with the railroad, he retired in 2013.

After he returned from Germany he started dating Debbie Knerr and they were married in Lincoln on August 5, 1972. They lived in Lincoln for six years before moving to an acreage outside Waverly, where they raised their two children. In 2000, Larry and Deb moved to Deb’s family farm outside of Walton, Nebraska, last October they moved to a townhouse in Lincoln.

Larry took pride in being physically fit by running and lifting weights. He also enjoyed weekly poker games with his friends. Larry had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a Green Bay Packers fan. He treasured the time he spent in nature in addition to time with family and friends. He loved all kinds of sports. When his children were young, he was actively involved in coaching their athletic teams. In his later years, one of his greatest joys was watching and cheering on his grandchildren as they participated in their own sports and activities.

Above all, Larry was a family man. His love, guidance, humor and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Jo Fountain. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Deb Fountain; his son Tyler (Jamie) Fountain and daughter Jessie (Jorge) Zuniga; grandchildren Ito and Nio Zuniga and Jocelynn, Archer and Brock Fountain; siblings Carrol (Linda) Fountain, Diana Smith, and Rich (Kim) Fountain; and brother-in-law Larry (Lynn) Knerr.

A Celebration of Larry's life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Prairie Creek Inn Opry Barn, 2400 S. 148th St., Walton, Nebraska (Time to be announced closer to date) The family requests you dress casually or in camo, Green Bay or Huskers Red.
