Linda Louise Joyce Sundberg was born February 1, 1941, in Omaha, NE, to G. Benjamin “Ben” and Ann (Amsden) Joyce. On October 4, 2026, she joyfully went home to be with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. Linda was younger sister to Judy and older sister to Kristin. In her early years, she enjoyed living across the street from her maternal grandparents. At age five, her family moved to Lincoln, where Linda spent her school years and graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1959, having served as Pep Club President. She was talented in sports and music, and was always a good student.
Linda entered college at the University of Nebraska and participated in music with the UNL Madrigal Singers. She also developed her lifelong love of bowling, which began through competition on the UNL team and continued for decades of league play at Lincoln’s Parkway Lanes. It was through activities with the Alpha Phi sorority that Linda met David Sundberg from Red Wing, MN. The two were smitten and made wedding plans for October 13, 1961.
From 1962-67, Linda supported Dave as he served five years in the United States Army, including three years with him in Germany. She also learned the sacrifices a military wife must face, with young children at home while he was serving his country in Vietnam. It was not an easy time, and Linda struggled during these years with an alcohol and prescription drug addiction. She credits the devotion of her husband, along with good friends and Alcoholics Anonymous, in helping her beat that addiction. After achieving sobriety in 1970, Linda was committed to supporting and counseling many who struggled likewise. She served for years with the Lincoln Council on Alcoholism and Drugs and also helped found the Chemical Dependency Center. The list is long of those who received support from Linda in their recovery years.
Linda was an active and committed mother to the three children born to her marriage with Dave: son Craig (& Nancy Whitcomb) of Lincoln, and daughters Amy (& Marty Mincer; & previously Lance McCord) of Hamburg, IA, and Wendy (& Patrick Kuhl) of Lincoln. Her family tree boasts eight grandchildren: Aaron Sundberg (Amber), Brett Sundberg (Jenny) and Elizabeth Sundberg; Wesley McCord, Anna McCord Johnson (Joel) and Jackson McCord (Hailey); Nick Kuhl (deceased) and Natasha Kuhl Lorenson (Brett). She was also known as great-grammy to Kristofer Bogue, Lily Lorenson, Shane Lorenson, Colin Sundberg, Teddy Sundberg, Emma Sundberg, and Will Sundberg, with great-grandson McCord set to make his arrival in March 2027.
Linda’s family was struck with tragedy in February of 2006 when she was hit by a car and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Through the prayers of many and good therapy at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Linda made an amazing recovery. Her family was forever grateful for the many additional years God granted them with their wife, mother and grandmother.
She loved many family dogs over her lifetime, but none more than the last Golden Retriever, Duke, who was certainly the best dog ever. Linda was a lifetime Husker fan, cheering on the football, basketball, and volleyball teams faithfully. She was an amazing cook and, together with Dave, entertained countless groups in their many homes. For decades the Sundberg Bed & Breakfast hosted a lengthy guest list of family and friends from near and far.
Linda served her community well through work with the following organizations: head of PTA; coach with South Lincoln Track Club; board member with Lincoln Crisis Pregnancy Center and Lincoln Young Life; dedicated member and choir participant at First Free Church; active supporter of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital; and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. In 1976, she had the honor of being named one of five Outstanding Young Individuals by the Lincoln Jaycees. And outstanding she certainly was.
Linda was preceded in death by her beloved David (Oct. 2022). Her desire to join him in eternal life with Christ has been fulfilled. Left to cherish Linda’s memory are her children, grandchildren, her sister Kristin Joyce-Guy from Sarasota, Florida, and many other family and friends.
Celebration of Life service on October 24 at 11:00 at First Evangelical Free Church (3280 S. 84th St.) with lunch to follow. Memorials to Young Life Lincoln or Cedars Youth Services.
