Martha graduated from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in 1948 and received her Registered Nursing certificate that same year. She married John Douglas McLeod on October 7, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas after having first met on New Year’s Eve 1949. They shared a loving marriage lasting nearly 45 years, until Doug’s passing. Besides raising five children, Martha had a long and varied career in the nursing field that included surgery, emergency and concluded at UNL’s Student Health Center.
Martha had a passion for life, showing great interest in the details of nature, gardening, the weather, loved ones’ lives and especially her family. She also had a giving spirit and volunteered at numerous organizations throughout her life, including Westminster Presbyterian, where she was a member since moving to Lincoln in 1962, Sprague Community Church Sewing Circle and Meals-on-Wheels. Her zest for life carried her through a long and wonderful experience at her home, Frog Acres.
Survived by her children Melinda McLeod (Leigh Fortier), Scott, Kim Glathar (Kurt), Stan (Renate), Kevin (Art Avitia); grandchildren Natalie Fleming, Emily Fleming, Kyra McLeod, Heather McLeod; step-grandchildren Ann Clark (Dave), Laura Glathar and Daniel Glathar; as well as over 30 nieces & nephews and two sisters-in-law, Jo Morz and Velma Morz.
Preceded in death by her loving husband, Doug; her brothers & sisters: Charlotte, Walter, Paul, Otto, Ruth, Irma and Betty.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 19th, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home 6800 S 14th Street. In lieu of flowers, Martha loved trees and would appreciate a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation.
