Mickie was born on October 26, 1930, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to William and Cora (Akin) Tobin. She spent her early childhood in Clark, South Dakota, before the family returned to Mitchell, where she later graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1948. She went on to earn her nursing degree at Creighton University in 1951.
Mickie began her career as a registered nurse serving communities on South Dakota’s Indian Reservations. She later worked at North Platte Hospital and Lincoln General Hospital before joining the Goodyear Dispensary in Lincoln, where she served as manager for 28 years. She retired in 1996 and maintained her RN license until the age of 80; a reflection of her lifelong dedication to caregiving.
Mickie was known for her generosity and her instinct to help others. She cherished her family, loved animals and enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by her children, Candice (Dan) Wild of Lincoln, Nebraska; Casey (Teresa) McGrew of Lubbock, Texas; and Tammy (Craig) Hemje of Syracuse, Nebraska. She leaves seven grandchildren—Abigail Wild, Joshua Wild, Scott McGrew, Trevor McGrew, Nate Hemje, Aaron Hemje, and Ryan Neff—and great grandchildren Catherine McGrew, Julia McGrew, Baker Hemje, Aedan Neff, and Cillian Neff.
Mickie was preceded in death by her parents; her seven siblings; her husbands, Andrew Fleming I and Harold Dewey McGrew I; her son, Andrew Fleming II; and her great granddaughter, Nora Neff.
A private celebration of life and burial will be held.
