I am unable write an obituary for Ron, but what I can do is write a letter about the man that I am blessed to call my husband, my sweetheart and my friend. He has made my world a wonderful place and I will miss his steadfastness, his humor and his hugs.
On May 7, 1944 Emil and Elsie Moravec became the proud parents of a handsome baby boy. Yes, I’m sure he was already handsome. He joined his older sister, Fern, on the family farm which was located outside Cotesfield, Nebraska. Growing up on the farm was great, but when Ron was in Jr. High, the Moravec’s moved to Chula Vista, California for 2 years. Fern had moved to California earlier and Elsie missed her girl terribly. Ron always carried great memories of their time in California, however, Nebraska kept calling them back. It would always be home.
He graduated from the North Loup-Scotia School in 1962 with 31 classmates. He had been active in FFA, football and track. June 1962 found Ron in the United States Air Force and heading to the Philippines. He always remembered getting off the plane and hitting the wall of heat and humidity. His 2nd tour of duty was in Germany. Smart man that he was, in 1966, the last 30 days of his military career found Ron and 2 buddies seeing all the sites in Europe.
When he got home it was time to get down to business and he headed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he graduated in 1970 with his Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement. This was followed by attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he earned his Juris Doctor in May 1973.
There were many part-time jobs to help supplement the income of our budding attorney. My personal favorite is that he was a bartender at the original Dundee Dell.
However, it was not all work and no play!
June 1972 found Ron at the alter with Kathy Bylund. From this union came 2 of the most important people in Ron’s world: Melanie and Nancy.
Ron Moravec was many things. Some of the words that best describe him include: honorable, dependable, reassuring, thoughtful and fun. Above all, he was a loving father to Melanie and Nancy. He could always be found videotaping dance recitals, birthdays or family gatherings, anything that involved his girls. Most importantly, he was a constant source of love and support. To this day, both girls will proudly announce to anyone that Ron Moravec is “MY Dad.”
Life has only gotten better for Ron with his 2 grandsons, Aiden and Reid. In true Grandpa Ron fashion, he shows his unshakable belief and love for the boys. I remember when Aiden was small, they would play Horsey and Ron would carry Aiden on his back. At the Celebration of Ron’s Life you will see a tall young man with a humble heart and a gentle smile honoring Ron by acting as a pallbearer. It is Aiden taking his turn carrying Grandpa Ron. His younger brother Reid has a familiar twinkle in his eye and smile in his heart. It is easy to see Ron in each of them. Did I mention, they are both handsome?
Ron has served the people of Nebraska in many ways over the years. He was the Cass County Attorney, then an Assistant Attorney General for the Drug and Violent Crime Division. He was also proud to serve as the Deputy Nebraska Secretary of State. In his retirement he continued to serve others. Whether it was volunteering at Veterans’ Affairs and driving veterans to appointments or cruising Interstate 80 for the Nebraska State Patrol as a member of their Motorist Assistance Program, Ron was always willing to help. The Big Red was in his veins and helping out at the football games was almost a guilty pleasure.
I’ve known Ron since 1985. I still remember my first impression of him, I thought he was the nicest and noblest person I’d ever met. Time changed many things, but in September 2000 when I was blessed to become his wife, two things had not changed, he was still the nicest, noblest person I’d ever met. And yes, handsome.
In my world, Ron will always be the best part.
Becky
