Sue was born on December 19th, 1952 at St. Elizabeth Hospital to Bob and Bonnie Eckery. She grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska , and attended LSE (‘70) and later graduated UNL with a degree in elementary education. She met Rick Johnson at Swing-In food store in 1972. They were married one year later in Sept, 1973 and were married over 51 years. They had two sons Ken (‘78) and Ben (‘82). Sue had a gift for patience and kindness. She spent 44 years as a kindergarten teacher, and is remembered for her love of preparing children for life. She retired in 2018, but continued to share learning through Grandma Sue’s summer school.
She was a talented seamstress. She loved puzzles, labradors, and books. She walked countless miles with friends and dogs. She enjoyed traveling and planning summer vacations. Always a wrestling mom, she endured tournaments and supported her boys and grandkids in all their activities. She loved holidays and celebrated birthdays and events with vigor.
She is eternally adored by her spouse Rick, children Ken (Katie) and Ben (Ashley), grandchildren Josey, Emma, Hadley and Damien, brother Mike (Deb) Eckery, nephew Dane (Chara) Eckery and by countless friends who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Bob and Bonnie.
Sue will be deeply missed. The family is so very grateful that her struggle is over and she has found peace.
A visitation for Sue will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68512. A funeral services will occur Friday, August 22, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The LPS Foundation or the Food Bank BackPack Program in memory of Sue.
