Vera Edith Johnson
Vera Edith Johnson was born September 28, 1926 and passed away at her home April 9, 2018. She was 91 years 6 months and 9 days old.
Vera was the third oldest of eight children. She was born at home on the farm to Richard and Anna Faatz Northwest of Butte, NE. Vera began attending school at District nine at the age of four years old. She attended school through eighth grade at which time she began working outside the home. Her first job was on the Qualm ranch. She got homesick and returned home. She worked in several jobs culminating in working at Harper’s Drugstore in Spencer NE before she was married. Vera married the love of her life, Bud, on February 28, 1946 at the Rosedale Covenant Church. He first noticed her at a Saturday night dance in Butte NE and the relationship developed when she made him pineapple sundaes in the drugstore.
Upon marriage, Vera moved to their farm six miles northeast of Spencer, NE. Vera took on the role of wife and mother with diligence. She raised two children, sewed and mended clothes, kept a garden, raised and canned chickens, gathered and sold eggs, helped milk cows, picked corn, helped sow oats and put up hay. And if that wasn’t enough she was active in the neighborhood women’s club. It was during this period of her life that years of exposure to the Gospel message bore fruit. In 1962 our mother knelt in front of a kitchen chair in her house and there placed her faith in Christ completely for salvation. Both of my parents attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spencer where my mother was active in teaching Sunday school.
After her children were raised she went back to work at the Gambles Hardware store and worked in Dr. Zidko’s dental office where she became a dental assistant in Spencer, NE. In 1984 they built a house in Lincoln, NE. They held a farm sale in February of 1985 and moved to Lincoln. There she earned her GED and became a certified dental assistant and worked at the University of Nebraska dental college. It was here in Lincoln that she and Bud celebrated 70 years of marriage on February 28, 2016. Upon moving to Lincoln, they joined the Grace Community Church and then Elevate Church where she continued attending faithfully as her physical health permitted.
Upon her retirement from the dental college she worked part time for HyVee Foods. Vera and Bud enjoyed travelling and fishing at Highrock Lake Lodge in Canada. They enjoyed their children and grandchildren travelling to Texas to take part in family and school activities. Finally they were active throughout life in various church activities and charitable pursuits.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Bud. She leaves behind her Daughter Judith Johnson and son Roger Johnson, his wife Denise and her two grandchildren Alicia Johnson and Austin Johnson. She is survived by her sisters Darlene Maloney, Alice Smalley, and is survived by her aunt Lydia Gentile. In addition to these she leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces and nephews she all held very dear.
