Welden Duer, 91, of Lincoln passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born June 26, 1926 on the family farm near Staplehurst, NE (Seward County) to Emil and Annette (Hermann) Duer. Welden attended school at Staplehurst and Seward High School.
Welden was drafted into the Army in June 1945. Following basic training, he served with the 63rd Signal Operations Battalion in Salzburg, Austria installing, maintaining and repairing communications equipment. Welden began his career at LT&T (Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company) in 1947 as a Combination Man. In 1950, Welden joined the Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty at Selfridge Air Force Base in Mt. Clemons, MI assigned to the communications division. He was honorably discharged from the military and returned to LT&T serving in a variety of positions. Welden worked for LT&T for 43 years with his final position in David City as Area Manager of Butler County.
Welden was united in marriage to Georgene Ehlers on August 20, 1950 and they welcomed 4 children: Katherine, Mark, Sarah and Curt. Throughout his life, Welden was very active with the Lutheran Church, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, variety of local committees and the Telephone Pioneer Association. Welden was kind-hearted and lived a long, full life. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, traveling, dancing and spending time with his family and friends.
Welden is survived by his wife, Georgene; daughter, Katherine (Ron) Hotovy of David City; son, Rev. Mark Duer of LaGrange, IL; daughter, Sarah Duer of Lincoln; son, Curt (Stefania) Duer of Panama City Beach, FL; grandchildren, Veronica Hotovy, Rebecca Hotovy, Nico Duer and Luca Duer and sister, Nelda Minzel of Hastings.
Welden is preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Norman “Buck” and Verley Duer; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Leo Volzke and Audrey and Leonard “Red” Williams.
VISITATION Tuesday, March 27 from 5-7pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. FUNERAL SERVICE Wednesday, March 28 at 10:30am at Good Shepard Lutheran Church 3825 Wildbriar Ln, Lincoln, NE 68516.
