Wieslaw Szydlowski was born in the town of Brest in Eastern Poland on March 1st, 1938, to Jan and Janina (Awgulewicz) Szydlowski. He passed away on May 18, 2019, surrounded by family. Wieslaw spent most of his childhood in Warsaw, Poland, where he attended the Technical University of Warsaw and earned his Ph.D. and ultimately joined the engineering faculty for a tenure of 19 years. In 1983, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and joined the Mechanical Engineering department as a professor — a position he held until the age of 79.
In addition to his academic career, Wieslaw was a true Renaissance man who spoke numerous languages, competed on a national level as a body builder, and enjoyed painting, sculpting, and photography. He was a nature and animal lover, and few things gave him more pleasure than long walks with his dogs.
Wieslaw was preceded in his death by both parents and first wife, Lucyna (Widulinska) Szydlowski. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Laura (Hanshaw) Szydlowski, as well as his sons, Piotr (Ewa) and Mikolaj (Bethany), along with stepchildren Maureen (Patrick) Linke, David Parks, and Benjamin (Sonja Rose) Parks, as well as grandchildren.
