Dorothy was born February 11, 1934.
Dorothy McDuffie, daughter of the late Douglas Peterson Sr. and Corine Blanding Jenkins Peterson, was born on February 11,1934 in Sumter, South Carolina. She was called home to eternal rest on June 26, 2022.
At an early age, she joined Antioch United Methodist Church in South Carolina and later became part of the bones of the Antioch AME Zion Church in Linden, NJ where she was a Deaconess, Trustee, and Head Usher. She also served on the Stewardess Board, Usher Board, and Choir and tithed faithfully. She was married to her late husband Elijah McDuffie Sr. (Mack) for 63 years.
Dorothy was the glue and fabric of her family and community. She was a matriarch — and led her family with dignity and grace. She welcomed everyone into her home with a warm meal and a smile, no matter where they were in their lives. Dorothy loved God, and she loved people unconditionally. She was a living, breathing example of Christ. People from all over, affectionately referred to her as “Grandma Dorothy.” She never had a single enemy.
Dorothy lived a wonderfully, full life. She travelled all over the world with her church crew, the 5 G’s — dressed in the finest clothes and was known for her red lipstick and red nail polish. She worked at Woodbridge State School where she cared for children with mental disabilities for 37 years as a supervisor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Douglas Peterson Jr. and Harold Cleveland Peterson; and her daughters, Brenda McDuffie (Chubby), and Jerolyn McDuffie (Kitty).
Those left to cherish her memories include: her sisters, Mamie Peterson (Magnolia), and Ruby Oaks; her children, Elijah McDuffie Jr. (Donnie), Wanda Biera McDuffie, Danny McDuffie, Marvin McDuffie Sr., Ronnie McDuffie (Runchie); her stepchildren, Loretta McDuffie, Rick Callands and Hop Hopskin, her grandchildren; Herron Anderson, Jamarl Anderson, Sakeenah El-Amin, Haashim El-Amin, Nicole Robertson, Monique McDuffie (Mo), Matthew McDuffie, Danielle McDuffie, Marvin McDuffie Jr. (Muffin), Brian McDuffie, Marcus McDuffie, EJ McDuffie, Justin Scott McDuffie, Brittany Biera, Brandon Biera, Bradley Biera, and Terell McDuffie and Monique McDuffie; 30+ great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
