Born in Barcelos, Portugal where as a young man, José entered the military and fought in Angola. In 1992, he emigrated with his wife and son to New Jersey to make a better life for his family. José was a hard worker, spending much of his career in the IUOE Local 825 as a machine operator. After retiring, he and his wife settled in Colonia, NJ.
José had a love of watching soccer and was a devoted Benfica fan. His true calling came in 2010, when he became a grandfather. José was known as the “baby whisperer” since he could always calm down a crying grandchild. His grandsons affectionately called him their “Boo”. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with grandchildren whether it was playing back-to-back games of tic-tac-toe or just watching them play on their tablets.
José is survived by his wife, Maria Alice Vilas-Boas, and son, Victor Hugo Vilas-Boas and wife Melissa; his grandchildren, Logan Vilas-Boas; Evan Vilas-Boas; Noah Vilas-Boas; his brothers and sister, Francisco; Americo; Manuel; Joaquim; David; Fernando; Miguel; Carmo; their wives; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clementina Vilas-Boas and Manuel DaSilva.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Rahway Hospital CCU for their care and compassion.
