Josette Dorival was born on March 27, 1939, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to her devoted parents, Venance and Concelia Dorival. The eldest of four siblings, Josette was raised and educated in Haiti, where she developed strong family values and a lifelong spirit of care and generosity.
Throughout her life, Josette frequently traveled to the United States and Canada to visit her beloved siblings, nieces, and nephews. After the passing of her mother in 1995, she made the decision to settle permanently in the United States. She spent many happy years as a resident of Roselle, New Jersey, before eventually making her home in Linden.
Affectionately known as “Tante Zette” by the children in her extended family, Josette embraced the role of a second mother with boundless love and compassion. Though she did not have children of her own, she nurtured and helped raise her nieces, nephews, and younger cousins with unwavering devotion. She was a constant source of support— a guiding hand, a listening ear, and a safe place for many.
One of her most cherished sayings was:
“Dorival, nou pa anpil; l’union fait la force.”
“Dorival, we are not many, and our unity is our strength.”
This was more than just a phrase to Josette—it was a family creed. To her, unity was sacred. No matter the circumstances, she believed that love, forgiveness, and togetherness would always prevail.
Josette will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her grace, and her boundless kindness. Her deep love for her family—especially its youngest members—shone through in all she did. Her warmth, wisdom, and compassion were a gift to everyone who knew her, and her memory will forever remain a guiding light in our hearts.
She is survived by her devoted nephews: Vladimir Dorival, Gregory Dorival, Dudley Dorival, and Youri Pascal; and her cherished nieces: Dominic Pascal, Jo-Ann Dorival, Nadege Toth (Joseph), and Tahjanaya Dorival. She also leaves behind her adored great- nieces and nephews: Kashaya Pascal, Alyssa Dorival, Solé Dorival, Elisandra Dorival, Devin Dorival, Rhian Dorival, Jordyn Dorival, Chace Dorival, Isabelle Toth, and Elise Toth. Josette’s loving memory is also held by her sisters-in-law, Solange Dorival and Colette Dorival.
She is now reunited in eternal peace with her parents, Venance and Concelia Dorival, and her beloved siblings: Bellegarde Dorival, Arnold Dorival, and Marie-Ange Dorival.
May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory continue to inspire unity, love, and kindness in all of us.
