On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, Ken Kuohsiung Tu, loving husband and father of two daughters, passed away at the age of 82. Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1939, Ken received his Bachelors in Industrial Education from National Taiwan Normal University, Shīdà.
Ken taught industrial education in Taiwan for several years and married his sweetheart Cindy in 1968 and within two years, Julie and Tina were added to his family. A few months before Tina’s birth, Ken forged a new path in the budding family’s life by accepting a senior media reporter position with the China Times in New York City and within a year and a half, his young family joined him as new immigrants in Brooklyn, New York.
Prior to coming to New York, Ken and Cindy both led established lives in Taiwan, but they wanted more for their family’s future. Leaving the comfort of their familiar homeland, family, and friends, Ken and Cindy reinvented themselves in America through grit and wits. Their boldness and determination served them well, as over the years they found success in retail, scrap metal import/export, metals recycling, and real estate management.
Despite forging a new life in America, Ken’s heart and affections for Taiwan never left him. He was an active participant in many Taiwanese civic groups and was a great proponent in the Taiwanese independence movement.
Ken was much more than just his accomplishments. More than just what he did, is who he was. His circle of influence was not limited only to his immediate family but included many friends and countrymen. He always took the time to connect with people and through his humble nature and life experiences, he found unique ways to impart some humor and wisdom in his interactions with people.
Since coming alone to the US over fifty years ago, Ken touched many lives (leaving everyone better off for knowing him) and built up a circle of friends and family that will miss him dearly. Ken is survived by his wife Cindy; his two daughters and their husbands Julie and Bill, Tina and Roy; and grandson Mark.
A memorial service for Ken will be held Sunday, January 30, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 East Saint George Ave, Linden, NJ 07036.
