Margaret “Peg” Hinkley, 88 years old, passed away on November 27, 2024. She was a resident of Atria Senior Living in Cranford, NJ since 2019. Born on December 9, 1935, Peg was the first-born child of Margaret and Timothy O’Leary. Peg is survived by her two daughters, Margaret (Peggy Ann) Hinkley and Susan Hinkley, her brother, Brian, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James (Jim), in 2006, her sister, Patricia, in 2020, and her brother, Timothy, in 2021. Peg was a longtime resident of Elizabeth, NJ, having lived there since 1950 when her parents moved the family from Brooklyn, NY where Peg was born. Peg graduated from St Mary’s High School in 1954, attended Seton Hall University for a year, then had a career at Bell Telephone Company where she worked in the NJ office, eventually transferring to the Manhattan, Kansas office where her husband was stationed in the Army. Upon her return to NJ, Peg continued as a devout parishioner of St Mary’s of the Assumption Church, where she lived her faith. Peg served as a lector, bible study group, supported CYO, and many other activities for the parish. Jim and Peg were a wonderful example of a married couple for participants in RCIA and Pre-Cana programs. Peg had lifelong friendships with a group of women who referred to themselves as "Club". They met regularly for lunch or dinner, PaperMill Playhouse shows, and shopping trips to the outlets in PA. Peg worked for over 20 years for the Housing Authority of the City of Elizabeth. Peg and Jim liked to travel. There were several trips to Canada, a trip to Ireland, cruise to Alaska, Bermuda and Aruba. But coming home was always their goal. Peg passed quietly in her sleep.
Peg’s viewing/wake will be held at Krowicki-McCracken funeral home at 2124 E St Georges Ave, Linden, NJ 07036 on Thursday, December 5 from 3-7. Peg’s ashes will be buried with her husband, Jim, at St Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia at a future date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities in her memory.
