It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Maria Platta, at the age of 96, of Bayway Ave, Elizabeth, NJ. Maria passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 25, 1928, in Janwarow, Poland, Maria was the beloved wife of the late Frank Platta. Together, they built a life filled with love and devotion. Maria was the proud mother of three children: her late son, John Platta, and her surviving children, Halina Badaan and Edward Platta.
Maria “Babcia”, was a cherished grandmother to six grandchildren: Christopher Platta, Cory Schepisi, Samantha Platta, Amira Amaisse, Brandon Badaan, and Nicole Ingrassia. She was also a devoted great-grandmother to ten great-grandchildren: Sydney Schepisi, Ali Schepisi, Lucy Schepisi, Natalie Schepisi, Scarlett Amaisse, Serafina Amaisse, Sienna Amaisse, Patrick Amaisse Jr., Benton Stark, and Boden Stark.
A resident of Bayway Ave since 1958, Maria “Babcia” was an active and beloved member of St. Hedwig's Parish in Elizabeth. She shared her beautiful voice as a member of the parish choir, where her singing touched the hearts of many, whether it was Ave Maria or Happy Birthday with that high note on “youuuuuuuuu.” Known for her kindness and generosity, Maria’s soul radiated warmth, and her presence was a blessing to all who knew her.
Maria's love for crafting and sharing was evident in the dozens of custom crochet dolls she lovingly made, many of which can be found all over the world. She delighted in giving them away and found joy in the smiles they brought to others.
An animal lover and true “whisperer,” Maria had a special bond with her two beloved cats, Yatzek and Misha, who were bilingual in both English and Polish. She also cared for many neighborhood strays, who would often leave gifts of mice on her doorstep in gratitude for her kindness. Maria adored nature and animals, regularly feeding the birds in her yard and taking long walks in Warnaco Park with her dog, Duke. Her loyal companion Duke would bring her his leash and shoes when it was time for his walks and would even carry her bag home after their strolls.
Maria's green thumb was legendary—she could take any plant, any seed, or even a stem, and nurture it into a thriving garden. Her hands were never idle as she tended to her beautiful yard, where she found peace and joy. Anyone who visited Maria knew they would leave with something from her house, a reflection of her generous and loving nature.
Though she lived to 96, Maria’s spirit remained young and vibrant, and her heart was always open to others. She had a special love for children and would often bring books and toys to church, distributing them to young ones with the joy that only she could bring.
Maria’s life was one of love, generosity, and beauty. Babcia made a lasting impression on everyone she met. Our family is deeply grateful that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had the privilege of hearing her stories. We are truly blessed to have had her in our lives, and we will continue to share her legacy of strength and determination with the generations to come.
She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and deep devotion to her family, friends, and faith. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her memory will continue to inspire and comfort us.
Maria’s love and soul will forever be felt by all those who were lucky enough to meet her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with those she loved and cherished.
