Martha Marquez (Garcia), of Lakewood, New Jersey, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at her home, surrounded by her family. Martha was born on June 7, 1932, in La Habana, Cuba, to her late parents Angela Hernandez and Juan Garcia. In Cuba, she was a professional seamstress and worked at her father’s radio and small appliance shop where she discovered her technical savvy for making repairs. In 1962, after the Revolution, she fled Cuba with her husband and two young daughters, and was exiled to the United States. In 1963, she moved to NJ where she gave birth to her only son. In 1974, she became a naturalized American citizen in Elizabeth NJ, and resided in the state for the remainder of her life. In 1969, she started working full-time as a machine operator for J.B. Williams, a pharmaceutical company, in Cranford, NJ, until her retirement from Schering Plough in Union, NJ. She was a strong, independent woman who enjoyed going to work every day, making friends, with whom she remained close throughout the years.
Martha was a dedicated servant to her late husband and her three children, as well as her in-laws, who moved in with the family in 1969, after they, too, fled Cuba. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, who lovingly tended to the needs of her family; cooking, sewing, keeping up the house, decorating, painting and other household projects, in addition to working 60-hour weeks at the factory.
She was the most loving mother, who was proud of her three children, her daughter-in-law and son-in law, all of whom adored and cared for her until her last day. Her greatest joy was as a doting grandmother to her eight grandchildren, and great-grandmother to her six great-grandchildren.
Martha was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jesus Arturo Marquez, as well as her mother, Angela, and sister, Violeta Mestres, both of whom remained in Cuba.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, her eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
