Peterson Vertilus, a Son, Brother, Friend, and Warrior. Peterson Vertilus was a devoted son, a cherished brother, a loyal friend, and a true warrior. Born in Haiti, he began his education at Frère Hervé in Saint-Marc before moving to Port-au-Prince, where he attended Collège St. Pierre for his secondary studies. His passion for medicine led him to pursue four years of medical studies at the Université d'État d'Haïti (UEH). However, due to his family's relocation to the United States, he was unable to complete his medical degree. Determined to serve, Peterson joined the U.S. Army in 2017. He deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2018 as a Private First Class (PFC) and returned in the spring of 2019 as a Specialist. His dedication and leadership quickly earned him a place among the Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs). Throughout his military career, he was stationed at Fort Carson (Colorado), Camp Humphreys (South Korea), and Fort Riley (Kansas). Despite facing significant challenges, he remained steadfast in his duty until he was medically discharged. Never one to give up on his dreams, Peterson chose to continue his education. In the spring of 2024, he embarked on a new journey at Adelphi University in New York, pursuing a bachelor's degree in biology with the goal of attending medical school. His passion for science and service was evident in every endeavor he undertook. At the time of his passing, Peterson was deeply engaged in a research project on malaria—an effort that, tragically, was cut short. On February 1st, he unexpectedly lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where he passed away on February 7th, 2024. Peterson’s legacy is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. He will be forever remembered for his kindness, strength, and relentless pursuit of knowledge and service.
