Born in Havana, Cuba, on July 13, 1937, to Jesús and Isabela Borges (both deceased), she was the younger sister of Sergio Borges (deceased). In 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, Julio Esquivel. Together they enjoyed 62 years of marriage and raised two children.
In her youth she attended the Universidad de Habana. When she wasn't in school, she could be found at Woolworth's Soda Shop working as one of the original soda girls in Vedado, Havana. She could also be found attending baseball games with her father to see their favorite MLB teams practicing in Cuba during the American off-seasons.
After emigrating from Cuba in 1967, she relocated with her family to Puerto Rico, then to Florida, and finally to New Jersey, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Together, she and her husband raised their family and lived in Elizabeth, NJ. Here, she got her first job in the states alongside her mother and sister-in-law at All Disc Records as a quality control specialist. She had a natural affinity for music, so listening for the small impurities in records before they became ready for sale came naturally to her. Sara's love for music never faded, as she could always be found singing, humming, and quoting songs for any situation.
Besides her love for photography and music, she was a world traveler who visited over 30+ countries. Regardless of money or mobility, she and Julio made sure to live life and see everything the world has to offer, whether that be on the Wall of China or simply enjoying the scenery of Warinanco Park.
After leaving All Disc, she began working at the Elizabeth Board of Ed, where she was hired as an aide in the student computer lab. She remained in the Elizabeth School System as an aide for special needs students for 15 years and enjoyed every second. Her kindness, patience, and dedication to the children of Elizabeth made her an irreplaceable and beloved educator.
She was a devoted wife and a loving mother who cherished her family above all else. Sara was known for always being ready with her camera to capture every moment of their lives together. Her grandchildren also got to experience this love, as they could always count on her to be their biggest cheerleader at any concert, game, or play. Sara loved nothing more than celebrating all of their accomplishments, but she was also always there to remind them that the sun would come out tomorrow if things didn't go right.
She is survived by her two children: Julio Esquivel Jr. and his wife, Donna, and Leticia Potash and her husband, David; and four grandchildren: Jessica, Jared, Samantha, and Alyssa. She also leaves behind four nieces and one nephew.
Visitation for Sara will be held Thursday, July 17, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at KROWICKI MCCRACKEN FUNERAL HOME, 2124 East Saint Georges Ave, Linden, NJ 07036.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a funeral on Friday, July 18, 2025, 9:00 am from the funeral home. Funeral mass St Genevieve's Church, Elizabeth, 10:00 am. Interment Rosedale Cemetery, Linden.
