She was born in Elizabeth, NJ on January 23, 1927 to Vittoria Grossi, whom she idolized and spoke about often throughout her life.
In 1950, Virginia met Richard W. Flynn, Sr. on what turned out to be the luckiest blind date in history. Ginny and Dick quickly became inseparable. As the story goes, she smiled beautifully when Dick, who was helping a friend paint the exterior of a gas station garage in Elizabeth, painted Ginny’s name in giant letters covering the entire side of the edifice. While that coat of paint was eventually covered over, Ginny’s beautiful smile and her love for the mural’s artist endured for the rest of her life. The two married on March 29, 1951; they honored each other for over 70 years of loving, dedicated marriage.
Ginny was a hard worker and held a number of jobs over the course of her life, one of which gave a rare glimpse into her sense of humor. As a secretary for Jefferson Screw Company, she routinely answered phone calls that were misdirected from Elizabeth’s Jefferson High School. Once, a caller asked, “Is this Jefferson School?” Her innocent response took the caller by surprise: “No, screw!”
Ginny was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Flynn Bye, her mother Vittoria Grossi, as well as her siblings Mike, Richard, Joseph, John, Kathleen, and Louis. She is survived by her husband Dick, her son Richard W. Flynn, Jr., and her son-in-law Stephen Bye. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Ricky, Christopher, Ellie and her husband Nick, and Molly, in addition to her siblings Mary, Julie, Verna, and Anne.
Ginny dedicated her life to her family. She was a selfless fountain of generosity, giving everything of herself without hesitation to ensure that her husband, children, and grandchildren knew in their hearts that her love was unconditional, constant, and infinite.
Her radiant smile touched the hearts of all who saw it. Her benevolent heart brought smiles to the faces of all who were lucky enough to know her. That love will live on through her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by those fortunate enough to call her wife, mother, and nana.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends and family to make a donation to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund https://curealz.org/giving/donate/ in memory of Ginny.
