

He was born in Augusta, Maine, on January 24, 1951, a son of the late Calvin and Beverly (Clark) Hinkley. He was a graduate of Gov. Baxter School for the Deaf in Falmouth, Maine, and attended college at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. He began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in Washington D.C. and later moved back to Maine with his family. He was proud to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years.
Growing up, he loved to play sports for both the rec and high school teams, playing basketball, baseball, and running cross country. He was a boy scout and continued until he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Gary was an avid sports fan who loved New England sports, especially the Boston Red Sox. He would often spend his free time watching games on TV and following players statistics. When visiting with Gary, you could expect to find him relaxing on his recliner, drinking Pepsi and willing to talk sports. He took pride in taking care of his family, and his home. He loved giving gifts to his family and would always try to find what he considered to be the perfect gift for everyone. Christmas was his favorite holiday.
He was predeceased by his parents Calvin and Beverly Hinkley, and a brother, Ronald Hinkley.
He is survived by his son, David Hinkley and his wife Amity of East Lansing, Mi., a daughter, Laura Lapierre and her husband Josh, of Freeport, Me., his daughter, Emily Hinkley of Augusta, Me., nine grandkids, Chesna, Grace, Sam, Ben, Jack, Emmett, Piper, Aila, and Stella; two sisters, Linda Violette and her husband Rick of Augusta, Me., Lori Brunelle and her husband David, of Chelsea, Me., a brother, Greg Hinkley and his partner Melissa of Rome, Me., several nieces and nephews, and a long time friend, Alma Simmons.
Per Gary’s wishes, there will be no service or visiting hours. A private graveside burial will take place in the spring.
