Donald Stanley Dumond

He was born on June 24, 1937, in Fort Kent, Maine, the son of Eddie and Olive (Landry) Dumond. He was one of nine children, starting life during the Great Depression. These humble roots taught him the value of hard work and to really appreciate what he had. He also learned the importance of helping others in ways big and small.

He attended the University of Maine where he earned a bachelors degree in chemistry and a masters degree in education. In 1960, he was drafted into the Army, where he was stationed in suburban Maryland, working in government laboratories. Upon discharge, he returned to Maine where he began his teaching career as a high school science teacher, first at Old Town High School, followed by Van Buren High School, and finally Fort Kent Community High School, where he taught chemistry for 28 years. He loved the students and he loved following the lives of as many as he could through the years.

He met the late Janet Russell when he was in third grade, and they were a couple from that day on. They finally married in June of 1964 and went on to live and raise their two children in the lovely Valley town of Fort Kent.

He and Janet relocated to Southern Maine following their retirement to be closer to their children and their granddaughter. He loved to read and to follow his granddaughter’s activities. He enjoyed attending many of the entertainment venues in Southern Maine, especially the Merrill Auditorium in Portland and the Maine State Music Theater in Brunswick. He also enjoyed going to see plays and shows in New York and Boston. But he mostly loved spending time with his family. He loved them so much and he was tremendously proud of them and their accomplishments.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Ted and Leroy; his sisters Willie, Emma, Rollande, Mae, Fern and Bobbie; and by his wife Janet in 2024.

He is survived by his son Russell (Mary Longhofer) of Portland, daughter Caryn Westland of Lisbon, and granddaughter Emily Westland of Sabattus.

He was a kind, sweet man who loved people and was loved back by many.

A very special thank you goes out to the staff at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Lewiston for their wonderful care and kindness and dignity that they provided Don in his final months of his life.

He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland.
